After a scam, many victims face further targeting by fake recovery services promising to retrieve lost funds for a fee. If you've fallen victim, remember that these scams exploit your stress and urgency.
If you’re a victim of these scams, it does not mean you were careless. These scams are designed to exploit stress and urgency after an initial loss. At Cybear – Track & Expose, we’ll help you understand exactly what happened, prevent further damage, and take back control with a structured recovery process.
Understanding how these scams work is the first step to protecting yourself.
Adam* initially lost money after falling victim to an online scam. Some time later, he was contacted by an individual who claimed to be a recovery specialist. This person already knew specific details about his original loss, which made it seem credible.
Adam was informed that his funds had been “flagged for release” and that recovery could begin once he paid a processing fee. The specialist claimed to be associated with a “Blockchain Authority” and used an email address that closely resembled the name of a legitimate organisation.
Adam was never provided with a clear scope of work, formal documentation, or a structured recovery process. There was also no verifiable involvement from banks, trading platforms, or recognised authorities.
It eventually became clear that Adam was part of a recovery scam designed to exploit his original loss.

A recovery scam targets people who have already lost money to a scam. Someone contacts you, or appears in your search results, claiming they can get your money back: a “recovery company”, a hacker, a lawyer, or even a fake police or government officer. They ask for an upfront fee, a “tax” or crypto to “unlock” your funds. Once you pay, they ask for more or disappear. Scammers often share victims’ details with each other, which is why the offer can arrive soon after the first loss.
Treat a recovery offer as a scam if:
Someone offering to get your money back? Send us the message or website and we’ll tell you if it looks genuine before you pay.
We help you save evidence from the original scam and the recovery offer, so your bank and police see the full picture.
We check how the money moved (bank, card or crypto) and tell you plainly what is and isn’t likely to be recoverable.
We guide you through reporting the original scam and the recovery scam to your bank, ReportCyber and Scamwatch.
Follows Australian authority guidance and international best practices.
Upload all case and scam information through our encrypted platform.
Your privacy and data are secure across jurisdictions.
A stress-free process designed to guide you every step of the way.
Before you engage any recovery service, look up its ABN on ABN Lookup, check that it isn’t on ASIC’s Investor Alert List, and look for reviews outside its own website. A legitimate firm explains what it can and can’t do, never guarantees results, and gives you a written scope and fee before you pay anything.
